Thoroughbred Tattoo Research!?

I have my TB's tattoo number and his year of birth, now what? I would like to find out his racing career, if he has one, how can I search for it? I do not have his racing name and his old owner does not have his papers. Is there an online database? I'd like the service to be free, if possible
