Need to find.... good antenna for TV... can't last much longer... help me please............oh the humanity!

I'm in a gated community. It won't allow TV antennas on roofs (can't blame 'em). Soooo.. I need to get small, high powered, (witha powered amplified?) antenna for indoors or possibly some unobtrusive spot outdoors. I went to antennaweb.org. It said that I needed a "Medium, Multidirectional Antenna." Any ideas on which one? I would be willing to spend up to $50 for a high end, highly effective antenna. I just don't want to have to deal with a young sales clerk who really is not knowledgeable about such stuff. I am wonder too if I placed "it" in my attic would I get better reception than placing it inside my home?..... You guys are awesome. Thank you in advance for your help... fuzzy channeling in fresno.
