He is Tibetan and not Chinese or Indian. In 1950 he was sworn in as the temporary leader of Tibet at the age of 15, by 1954 the People's Republic of China had invaded Tibet and he fled in fears that he would be murdered or otherwise killed by the Chinese government whilst in talks in Beijing. He is the leader of the Tibetan Government in exile.
